SEOUL, Korea, March 5, 2004 - After a sluggish start in the first month, domestic sales picked up the pace in February as Hyundai Motor Co. posted worldwide sales of 166,119 units, up by 19.6 percent over January. Overseas sales (combining Korean factory shipments and output of transplants) rose 19.8 percent over the previous month to reach 121,541 units.

Strong consumer demand for the Sonata, Elantra and Santa Fe coupled with solid commercial vehicle sales propelled Hyundai’s Korean sales upwards by 19 percent over the previous month to reach 44,578 units. The Sonata, Santa Fe and Elantra ruled the February sales chart as the nation’s top-selling trio. Domestic passenger car sales gained 10.7 percent to reach 20,725 units while the sales growth rate of SUVs and vans (led by the Santa Fe and Trajet) was even brisker, rising by 26.5 percent to 10,583 units.

Domestic commercial vehicle sales climbed by 27.9 percent to reach 13,270 units with the newly launched facelifted Starex / H100 van enjoying sales of 4,584 units, up 63.3 percent over the first month.

Transplants sold 25,907 units in February while Hyundai’s two Korean plants shipped 95,634 units (knock down kits excepted) last month for a 30.7 percent m-o-m gain. Cumulative overseas sales (transplant and Korean export production) for the first two months stand at 305,043 units, up 1.3 percent y-o-y.
